Quick Stats of the Project
- Category: 2-Hour Project
- Difficulty: 2/5 (Simple but requires precise leveling)
- Tools: Stud finder, Power drill, Level, 1×2 Furring strips (spacers), Wood screws, and Tape measure.
A pegboard system is the ultimate solution for “visual clutter” in a garage. By moving tools from junk drawers and bins to the wall, you reclaim your horizontal workspace and ensure every tool has a dedicated home. This setup makes your most-used items instantly accessible and helps you identify missing tools at a single glance.
Keep in mind…
- The Spacer Secret: Peg hooks need about 1/2 to 3/4 inches of empty space behind the board to loop through the holes. You must install furring strips (wooden spacers) against the wall before mounting the pegboard.
- Anchor to the Skeleton: Tools are heavy. Always use a stud finder to identify the wall studs and screw your furring strips directly into the wood framing, not just the drywall.
- Level Twice, Screw Once: Once your top furring strip is in place, use a 4-foot level to ensure it is perfectly horizontal. Even a slight tilt will cause your tools to hang unevenly and look unprofessional.
- Perimeter Framing: For the most stable system, build a full rectangular frame with your furring strips. This prevents the pegboard from bowing in the middle when you hang heavier items like power drills or sledgehammers.
Pro-Tip: The “Shadow Board” Trick
Once your tools are perfectly arranged, use a permanent marker to trace the outline of each tool directly onto the pegboard. This “shadow” acts as a visual placeholder, making it impossible to forget where a tool goes and instantly alerting you if something hasn’t been put back at the end of the day.
