Today, we are building a floating cloud lamp with soft glowing light and optional lightning effects. It can hang from the ceiling and makes your room feel cinematic at night.

You can style it in different ways, such as:

  • Calm and cozy
  • Cyberpunk RGB
  • Thunderstorm style
  • Space/cloud aesthetic

Total build time: About 1–2 hours.

What You Need

  • Round paper lantern
  • Polyester stuffing/pillow cotton
  • LED strip lights, fairy lights, or RGB smart LEDs
  • Hot glue gun or strong craft glue
  • Cotton spray paint
  • Fishing line or string
  • Scissors

Step 1: Build the Cloud Base

Open the paper lantern fully. This becomes the skeleton of the cloud.

  • Smaller lantern = compact cloud
  • Larger lantern = dramatic floating storm

Step 2: Glue the Cotton

Pull apart the cotton stuffing first. Do NOT glue giant chunks directly.

Try to achieve:

  • Soft texture
  • Uneven edges
  • Fluffy layers

Glue the cotton around the lantern slowly. Leave small gaps for light to escape. Make the shape irregular, like a real cloud. The messier it looks, the better.

Step 3: Add the Lights

Place LEDs inside the lantern or wrapped around the frame. RGB strips work best because you can change colors, pulse effects, and simulate lightning.

Best colors:

  • Warm white → cozy cloud
  • Blue/purple → storm cloud
  • Pink/cyan → cyberpunk vibe

Step 4: Spray Paint for Realistic Cloud Effects

Lightly spray darker shades onto parts of the cotton to create depth and shadow. Focus on the bottom edges, inner folds, and dense cotton areas. Use short, light sprays instead of soaking the cotton.

  • Gray/black shading → thunderstorm cloud
  • Purple/blue tint → cyberpunk cloud
  • Orange/pink tint → sunset cloud

Do not paint everything evenly. Uneven shading makes it look far more realistic.

Step 5: Hang the Cloud

Hang the cloud using fishing wire/transparent thread and ceiling hooks. You can hang it above the desk, in the corner of your room, over the gaming setup, or in the bed area.

Final Result

You end up getting an all-in-one night lamp in the form of a:

  • A floating glowing cloud
  • Dynamic ambient lighting
  • A room centerpiece that guests immediately love
