Fix Your Squeaky Doors This Weekend with These Tricks

You don’t need WD-40 or a trip to the hardware store to fix that squeaky door. The solution is probably already in your kitchen, and it takes less time than complaining about it.

What You Need

  • Cooking oil, olive oil, or coconut oil
  • Paper towel or cotton swab
  • Optional: bar of soap, petroleum jelly, or even butter

Let’s Start the Fix

Once you have the required items in hand, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Find the Culprit

Slowly open and close the door while listening carefully. The squeak is almost always coming from the hinges, not the door itself. Most doors have 2-3 hinges—zero in on which specific hinge is the noisy culprit by opening the door just partway and testing each hinge’s range of motion separately.

Sometimes it’s the top hinge, sometimes the middle. Rarely, it’s all of them. Identifying the exact source saves you time and product.

Step 2: Start the Process

Use any of these two methods, whichever you find more easy:

Option 1: The Oil Method

Put a small amount of cooking oil on a paper towel or cotton swab. You need it damp, not dripping. Apply it directly to the top of the squeaky hinge pin—that’s the metal rod running vertically through the middle of the hinge mechanism.

Let gravity do the work. The oil will naturally seep down into the hinge where the metal surfaces are rubbing together. Open and close the door 8-10 times in slow, full motions to work the oil into every part of the hinge mechanism.

Option 2: The Soap Alternative

You don’t have oil handy? Rub a bar of soap directly on the hinge pin with moderate pressure. You need to leave a visible soap coating. The soap acts as a dry lubricant and is considerably less messy than oil, though it doesn’t last quite as long.

Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) works even better if you have it, as it reduces friction. Even butter will work in an absolute pinch, though it can go rancid and smell weird after a few weeks.

Step 3: Keep Working On It

Keep opening and closing the door for 30-45 seconds after application. You should hear the squeak disappear almost immediately as the lubricant spreads through the hinge and creates a barrier between the metal surfaces. If you still hear noise, add a bit more lubricant.

The Permanent Solution?

These quick fixes last for months under normal use, but eventually, dust and debris will mix with the lubricant, and you’ll need to reapply. For a permanent solution, remove the hinge pin completely with a hammer and nail, clean it thoroughly, and apply a proper lubricant like silicone spray. But for instant relief with zero tools? Kitchen oil wins every time.
