Grease stains are the worst, but catching them early gives you a chance to save your favorite shirt.
What You Need
- Dish soap
- Paper towels or a clean cloth
- Cold water access
- Optional: baby powder, cornstarch, or chalk
The Immediate Response
First rule: blot, don’t rub. Use a paper towel to absorb as much surface grease as possible by pressing firmly and lifting straight up. Rubbing just pushes the oil deeper into the fabric fibers and spreads the stain to a larger area, making your problem worse.

Work from the outside of the stain toward the center to prevent spreading. Keep using fresh sections of your paper towel until you’re no longer picking up visible grease.
The Dish Soap Method
Apply a small drop of dish soap directly onto the grease spot. Dish soap formulation breaks down oils and fats, which is exactly what you need for grease stains. Gently spread it into the fabric with your fingers, creating a light lather. You should feel the fabric getting slippery as the soap emulsifies the grease.

Let the soap sit on the stain for 2-3 minutes. This dwell time allows the surfactants in the soap to penetrate and break apart the oil molecules fully. Afterwards, rinse with cold water—never hot, as heat sets grease stains permanently. Continue to work the fabric gently with your fingers while rinsing. The water should run clear when the grease is gone. Blot dry with a clean towel, pressing firmly to absorb moisture.
What if No Water Is Available?
If you’re nowhere near a sink, sprinkle baby powder, cornstarch, or even crushed chalk generously over the stain to cover it completely. These powders are incredibly absorbent and will suck the grease right out of the fabric fibers.

Let it sit for 2-3 minutes, giving the powder time to absorb the oil. You’ll actually see the powder darken as it soaks up the grease. Brush it off completely with your hand or a clean cloth. This won’t remove the stain entirely, but it’ll prevent it from setting and spreading until you can properly treat it.
The Catch
These methods work because you’re treating the stain while the grease is still fresh and sitting on the surface. If you are late by even 30 minutes, and the oil starts to oxidize and chemically bond with the fabric fibers, then you will see a permanent stain that even professional cleaning might not remove.
Act fast, stay calm, and your favorite shirt lives to see another day.
