What You’re Building
A giant wall-mounted world map that lets you track:
- Countries you’ve visited
- Future destinations
- Road trips
- Historic events
- Family roots
- Business locations
- Bucket-list adventures
It becomes both wall art and a personal record of your journeys.
What You Need
- Large corkboard, foam board, plywood, or MDF board
- Printed world map poster
- Spray adhesive or double-sided tape
- Push pins or map pins
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Scissors or utility knife
- Wall mounting hardware
Optional Extras
- Colored pins
- LED strip lighting
- String for connecting locations
- Small photo prints
- Labels or stickers
Step 1: Choose Your Board Size
The bigger the board, the more impressive the final result.
- 3 ft × 2 ft for smaller rooms
- 4 ft × 3 ft for offices
- 6 ft × 4 ft for a statement wall
Lay the board flat before starting.
Step 2: Attach the World Map
Carefully position the map on the board. Apply adhesive evenly and smooth out wrinkles as you work. Start from the center and move outward. Allow the adhesive to fully bond before continuing.
Step 3: Trim and Clean the Edges
Use a ruler and utility knife to remove excess material. Take your time. Clean edges make the project look professionally built rather than homemade.
Step 4: Create a Tracking System
Decide what each pin color represents.
Example:
- Red pins = Places visited
- Blue pins = Dream destinations
- Green pins = Future trips booked
- Yellow pins = Family locations
- Black pins = Historic events
A simple system makes the map much easier to understand at a glance.
Step 5: Add Photos and Connections
Print small photos from trips and attach them near the location. You can also run a string between destinations to show:
- Travel routes
- Road trips
- Business expansion
- Migration paths
- Historical journeys
This transforms the map into a visual story.
Step 6: Install LED Backlighting (Optional)
Mount LED strips behind the board.
- Warm white for a classic look
- Blue for a modern style
- RGB for a customizable setup
The lighting makes the map stand out dramatically at night.
Step 7: Mount the Board
Choose a prominent location such as:
- Home office
- Living room
- Gaming room
- Study area
- Hallway
Use proper wall anchors if the board is heavy. Make sure the board is level before permanently securing it.
Step 8: Keep Updating It
The best part of this project is that it evolves over time. Every new trip, goal, achievement, or adventure adds another layer to the map. Years later, you’ll have a visual record of your experiences covering an entire wall.
Creative Variations
The same board concept works far beyond a travel tracker. Here are six more ways to make it your own.
- Adventure Tracker: Pin every city, country, and road trip you’ve ever done. Over time, it becomes a visual autobiography of everywhere life has taken you.
- Family Heritage Map: Mark where different generations of your family lived, worked, and emigrated from. It is a powerful way to visualize your roots in one place.
- Business Expansion Board: Track clients, office locations, and projects across the world. Great for a meeting room or home office wall.
- Historical Events Map: Mark major world events, battles, discoveries, and milestones. Perfect for history lovers or educators who want learning on the wall.
- Space Exploration Version: Swap the world map for a solar system chart and track famous missions, rover landings, and space discoveries.
- Fantasy World Version: Print or draw your own fictional map and track the kingdoms, characters, and events from a story, game, or world you’re building.
