Here is a simple wooden bird feeder you can make today!

Building a bird feeder from popsicle sticks is simple, costs almost nothing, and brings songbirds straight to your garden. This guide covers everything you need to know before pressing play on the video below.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Popsicle sticks (ice-cream sticks)
  • White glue, like Fevicol, or a hot glue gun
  • Twine for hanging
  • Scissors
  • Optional: non-toxic paint made from food colors

Choosing Your Glue

Use white glue (Fevicol) because wood bonds strongly with it, producing a durable, weather-resistant feeder. The trade-off is drying time, so you’ll need patience between layers. For a faster build, use a hot glue gun. It sets in seconds but is less durable outdoors.

Important Tips

  1. Do not use synthetic paints

They can be toxic to birds, and overly bright colors scare them off. If you want to decorate, use only non-toxic paints made from food colors.

  1. Blend with the environment

Natural wood tones or muted shades help birds feel safe enough to visit.

Watch the Full Build

Watch it through once before starting, set up your materials, and pause as you go, especially during gluing.

Placement Tips

Hang your finished feeder about five feet off the ground, near a tree or shrub for cover, and out of reach of cats. Give birds a few days to find it, as once one arrives, more will follow.
