Quick Stats of the Project
- Category: 2-Hour Project
- Difficulty: 3/5 (Intermediate – requires power tools and a partner)
- Tools: Stud finder, Power drill, Level, Socket wrench, Tape measure, and Pencil.
Mounting your TV not only saves floor space but also places the screen at the optimal ergonomic height to reduce neck strain. By anchoring the mount directly into the wall’s wood studs, you ensure the heaviest part of your entertainment system is structurally supported, preventing a catastrophic and expensive fall.
Keep in mind…
- Line of Sight: Always aim for eye level when seated, or slightly higher for standing areas (like a gym).
- The Math Shortcut: Mount the brackets to the TV first, then measure from the top of the TV to the bracket holes to find your exact wall markings.
- Center-Finding: Don’t just find the stud; use a center-finding stud finder to ensure your lag bolts hit the strongest part of the wood.
- The “Goldilocks” Drill Bit: Your drill bit should match the diameter of the lag bolt’s shaft (not the threads) to prevent the stud from splitting.
Pro-Tip: The “Outlet Alignment” Hack
Most electrical outlets are mounted directly to the side of a stud. If your stud finder is giving you mixed signals, look at your wall outlet. One side of that outlet box is nailed into a stud, giving you a perfect starting point for your measurements.
