A stuck zipper is one of those small problems that becomes genuinely infuriating in the wrong moment. It can be a jacket you’re trying to get on, a bag you need to open, a pair of jeans that just won’t cooperate.
Before you force it and break it entirely, try these fixes. Start with the first one. Most people never need to get past it.
Figure Out Why It’s Stuck
Stuck zippers have three common causes, and the fix depends on which one you’re dealing with:
- Fabric caught in the teeth — you can see or feel something snagged
- Dry or corroded teeth — the slider moves but grinds and resists
- Misaligned teeth — the zipper slides but won’t close properly
Fix 1: Fabric Is Caught — Do This First
Don’t yank. Yanking the fabric bends the teeth.
Hold the fabric taut on both sides of the zipper with one hand to create slack at the snag point. With your other hand, gently wiggle the slider back while keeping that tension. Most snags release within a few seconds once you relieve the pressure.
If the fabric is deeply caught, use a pin or toothpick to carefully ease it away from the teeth before moving the slider again.
Fix 2: Zipper Is Dry or Corroded — Lubricate It
If the path is clear but the zipper still drags, the teeth need lubrication. You don’t need a special product. Any of these will work:
- Pencil (graphite) — run the tip along both sides of the teeth. Fast, dry, effective.
- Bar soap or a wax candle — rub lightly along the teeth, then work the slider back and forth.
- Lip balm or petroleum jelly — apply a thin layer with a finger or cotton swab.
After applying, slide the zipper slowly a few times to work the lubricant in. You’ll feel the resistance drop almost immediately.
Fix 3: Teeth Are Misaligned — Reset the Slider
If the zipper slides freely but won’t close, the slider itself has likely widened slightly and is no longer gripping the teeth properly.
Use a pair of pliers (or, in a pinch, the flat edge of a spoon) to squeeze the sides of the slider together very gently. A small amount of pressure goes a long way. Test the zipper after each small adjustment. Repeat until the teeth lock together cleanly when you pull.
Do this carefully. Over-squeezing will jam the slider completely.
Keep It From Happening Again
Run a graphite pencil along your zipper teeth every few months, especially on bags, luggage, and outdoor gear that see regular use. Fifteen seconds of maintenance prevents the problem entirely.
